Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is a dietitian? Are they the same as a nutritionist?
Registered Dietitians Nutritionists (RDNs) complete an accredited degree program, supervised practice, and a national registration exam. They are also licensed by the state and complete ongoing continuing education to maintain their credentials.
The term nutritionist is not regulated in many states, meaning education and training requirements can vary widely. Because of this, nutritionists are typically not eligible to bill insurance.
If you’re looking for evidence-based, regulated nutrition care — especially for medical, digestive, hormonal, or eating-related concerns — working with a Registered Dietitian ensures you’re receiving care from a credentialed healthcare professional.
-
Do you accept health insurance?
We are in-network with BlueCross BlueShield, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, and TriWest Alliance.
Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend calling your insurance company to ask about your specific benefits. They can tell you whether nutrition visits are covered, applied toward your deductible, or eligible for reimbursement. Click here for step-by-step instructions on how to check your benefits.
For all other insurance plans, we can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.
-
How many sessions will I need?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. How often we meet depends on your goals, your history with food, and what kind of support is likely to be most helpful.
We often recommend starting with weekly or biweekly sessions, then transitioning to monthly support as things begin to feel more manageable. We’ll talk through options together and adjust over time based on your needs and progress.
Working together across multiple sessions allows us to support you through real-life situations — like busy weeks, travel, holidays, shifts in appetite, or changes in symptoms — rather than trying to fit everything into a single visit.
Some people benefit from more frequent support, while others do well with a slower pace. Our goal is to build a plan that feels sustainable, supportive, and realistic.
-
Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?
In most cases, no referral is needed to schedule an appointment with a dietitian.
Some insurance plans (HMO) do require a referral for coverage, while others do not. You can use our How to Check Your Nutrition Insurance Benefits guide to confirm your specific plan’s requirements.
If you’re planning to self-pay, a referral is not required.
(You can always book a free discovery call if you’re unsure what your plan requires.)
-
What's the benefit of choosing a package?
In addition to offering cost savings, packages provide consistent, ongoing support — which is where most people see the biggest shifts.
Meaningful, lasting change rarely happens in a single session. Working together over time allows us to better understand your patterns, adapt strategies as your life evolves, and build skills that feel sustainable (not overwhelming).
Most of our clients choose to work with us for several months and find that this continuity leads to more confidence, less stress around food, and steadier progress.
Packages are typically recommended when we are out-of-network with your insurance. We can provide superbills for potential reimbursement, depending on your plan.
If you have questions about which option might be the best fit, schedule a free 15-minute discovery call.
-
Do sessions expire?
If you are using your health insurance to pay for services they will be billed for at time of service and will not expire.
If you have purchased a session package, you will have 6 months from the date of purchase to use all of your sessions. After 6 months any unused sessions will expire and you will have to purchase a new package.
-
Do I have to live in a certain area?
We are currently practicing in the following States:
Arizona, California, Colorado, Michigan, Texas, and Virginia
You will meet with your dietitian via video conference and communicate between sessions using your Practice Better portal.
-
Do you work with kids?
Yes, we work with children ages 12 and older.
